Based on the theme 'Deep in the Forest'. First thought was of some female elf/fae looking pretty under a tree with a few mushrooms for decoration. Ergo that was the last thing I'd draw. I'd been playing around with a Galago/Fairy Wren griffon (a very cute combo by the way- I need to do a proper drawing of them sometime. Maybe come srping when the local males are back in colour) and the combination of Spider Monkey/Cock-of-the-Rock seemed good to me. Probably partially inspired from the Bio Anth lecture on Night Monkeys-Spider Monkeys.

The original title was going to be 'Atelen Cotinga Griffons Lekking' but was scrapped on the basis that most people would probably only know 1/4 words. (Ateles is a genus which contains Spider Monkeys. Unfrotunatly I can't give a specific species that this was based on as I only got one reference and hastily at that to see how the legs jointed. Cotingas or Cotingidae are a family of birds which live in south and central America. There are some very interesting idividuals like the umbrella bird. I can be more specific about the Cotinga part of the griffons. They're based on the Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock....yes that's really it's name. Avoid using it in coments okay? I'm not sure if CotR and Spider Monkeys are sympatric, but it's fatnasy so it doesn't really matter. Finanly Lekking is basically males displaying to attract mates. There's normally one or more specific areas where this is done called leks. Lekking can be comunal or solitary. I think in the Guianan CotR it's comunal)

Oh yes....constructive cristism heartely encouraged.

Very nice work indeed! My, you have done such a good job combining these two species-very incongruous species at that!i am familiar with both, having read in Nat’l. Geo. about the pretty Guianan bird, and my friends used to have a spider monkey, foul nasty little beast it was, too. Took exquisite delight in doing rude things and trying to lure you close enough to bite. I really like the colors and thought it was an oil painting until I read the description of the technique. And one final comment on these: With your creativity, Shelz, I am so glad you are not studying to become a Genetic Engineer! Flying Monkeys and Griffons and Dragons, oh my!

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Errr....have you seen the Angel 2130 picture?

I’m glad someone recognised the species. The spider monkey of your friend’s doesn’t sound like it apreciated captivity. I’m not even sure you’d be able to have such a creature in captivity in Australia.

Thanks for the comment."

I don’t have anything like photoshop, so, yes, it was, lol.

Interesting combination of creatures, I didn’t see the back legs until I looked around. The overall picture is good, and the little bird-creatures are cute.

That is messed up. In a very good way mind you. Much like the feeling you get with surrealism. When I first looked at this image I tried to get a mental picture (or mental video if you may) on how it would move around and fly. That right there is what boggled my mind. My goodness. I think I need to take breaks between your images if they are all like this! Excellent work!

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Well there’s always the problem of working out how a griffon flies. They’re almost always too bulky and heavy looking to get off the ground.

There is another unusual griffon in the works. A very cute on though."

This is a great piece! You took an old idea and made it new and original. Well done.

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "There’s so much variety in birds that it seems a shame to always have griffons with eagle forequarters."
