A lesser wyvern enjoying a mid-afternoon sunbake. Lesser wyverns are small, about the size of a small kingfisher and, like the kingfisher, hunt fish in lakes and streams. They are mainly ambush hunters, diving from their perch onto an unsupecting morsal. However they are also excelent swimmers, their tails have addapted in a fin like shape for extra speed. Like all wyverns the lesser wyvern are feircely territorial. The males are particulary zealous during the mating season where territoral disputes are common and can lead to death.

Aw, it looks like a bird-dragon... very very good, great feathers!

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Well a wyvern is basically a bird dragon anyway."

Another nice dragony one! Reminds me vaguely of Archeopteryx, which really could have been a wyvern, i suppose. great detail work, very reminiscent of the detailed naturalist sketches like Audubon did.

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "I’m not familiar with Audubon, I’ll have to look him up....wait. Something of his might have fetched up in a primatology lecture....

I guess it is Archaeopterx in form. I can’t remeber if it was based on it though."

Lovely! I love such elaborate creature concepts. And this detailed drawing style.. well it’s pretty much what I am aiming for.
Did you also use a photo reference for the head?

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "I didn’t use any reference for the head but I did use one for the wings. The reference picture was actually the inspiration for this piece.

Just keep practicing with your pictures and you’ll get better. References are really usefull. It’s taken me a bit to realise just how usefull."
